What is Health & Wellness Coaching?

A coach acts as a bridge between where you are now and where you want to be, providing the support and structure that make your journey successful.

A National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach (NBC-HWC) is a trained professional who helps people make real, sustainable lifestyle changes. It is very different from the quick-fix advice you might see on social media. Board-certified coaches complete rigorous training and testing in behavior change, motivational interviewing, and lifestyle medicine.

Instead of telling you what to do, an NBC-HWC works alongside you to understand your goals, break them into doable steps, navigate obstacles, and build habits that truly last. It’s a supportive, science-backed partnership designed to help you feel empowered, not pressured.

Health and Wellness Coaching, Be Well Coaching

Many clients work with an NBC-HWC to turn their doctor’s recommendations into real-life routines that actually stick. For example, if your provider suggests improving sleep, a coach can help you create a bedtime routine, manage nighttime stress, and set up your environment for better rest. If you’ve been advised to increase physical activity, your coach can help you find movement you enjoy, build it into your schedule, and troubleshoot barriers like low energy or lack of time. And if your doctor recommends changes to nutrition, stress management, or chronic condition management, your coach helps translate those recommendations into small, doable steps that fit your lifestyle—so you’re not just told what to do, you’re supported as you learn how to do it in the way that works for you.

You’re in the Driver’s Seat

Health Coach, Mary Lawhorn at Be Well Coaching

I love a good metaphor. One of my favorites to use when explaining what it’s like to work with a coach, is that of a road trip. You are in the driver’s seat and your coach is in the passenger seat.

Before we set off, it’s important that you feel safe and comfortable with me in the passenger seat. That’s why we start with a free discovery call. It’s a chance to see if we’re a “good fit” - so important for a great road trip.

At our first session, we’ll explore where you are and where you want to go—your vision, not mine. We’ll tap into why you want to take this trip, and what you’d like to be different when you get there. We will draw on your strengths, past successes, and values to guide the journey. We will also look at possible barriers and roadblocks, so that we can proactively plan for them.

As we move ahead, you are in charge. Highway or back roads? Playlist or podcast? What speed feels best? You decide. So, while you’re making all the decisions, what am I doing? I’m not just along for the ride. I’m your trusted partner on this journey. I’m right there next to you, supporting, encouraging and empowering you. I’m asking the questions that help you set specific, achievable goals for each leg of the trip. Each mile brings you closer to your destination, and builds confidence and momentum.

Additionally, I’m at the ready with any resources you request. I know where the best gas stations, restaurants and lodging are. I can refer you to a great mechanic if you need one. Most importantly, I’m holding onto your vision for you, reminding you of your “why” —your ultimate guide.

I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to get started!
